Shalom is far more than the absence of conflict. It means wholeness, being intact, that nothing is missing and everything is in its place.
Where the Word Comes From
The root sh-l-m means to be whole, complete, sound. Related is shalem (complete) and even the word for paying, for making restitution, that is, making something whole again. When a Hebrew says “Shalom”, he is not merely wishing the other person quiet, but wholeness in body, soul and relationship.
Why It Often Gets Shrunk
When we hear “peace” we think of a ceasefire, of the guns falling silent. Shalom goes deeper. It is the state in which a person, a family, a life is sound and whole, in which the parts fit together and nothing lies broken.
What the Bible Means
The promised Savior is called “Prince of Shalom” (Isaiah 9:6). And Yeshua says: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you” (John 14:27). This is a peace that carries you from within, even when the storm rages outside. It is wholeness as a gift.
Why This Sets You Free
If peace means wholeness, then healing is a piece of shalom in the body, and reconciliation is shalom in a relationship. The goal is not just that the noise stops, but that the person becomes whole. This peace can be received, because it is given by the one who is himself the Shalom.
