Water: The Simplest Thing, and the Living Water

Water is the simplest thing there is, and the most important. Your body is about 60 percent water. It is the one drink you were built for, and of all things, that is what we have quietly replaced with almost everything else.

The drink you were built for

Every cell, the blood, the brain, digestion, temperature regulation, everything runs on water. It is the original drink, the only one the body truly needs. Throughout all of history, water was simply the drink. Then, within a few generations, it was swapped out: soda, juice, energy drinks, all sweetened and flavored. Today we drink our sugar (more on this under sugar) and wonder about the consequences. Even thirst is often mistaken for hunger.

The eight-glasses myth

An honest look: the famous rule of drinking eight glasses of water a day is not science. It goes back to a figure from 1945 that named about two and a half liters a day, and added in the same sentence that most of it is already contained in food. That second half fell away at some point, and the number traveled on alone. The truth is simpler: your need varies with heat, movement and health, and a large part of your water comes from food, especially from fruit and vegetables. There it is again, the connection to the whole food. You do not have to count glasses. Your body has a precise gauge: thirst, and the color of your urine.

From the bottle: the plastic price

The modern twist. Bottled water is sold as the pure, healthy choice. But a 2024 study measured around 240,000 plastic particles in a single liter of bottled water, most of them nanoplastics, roughly three times as many as in tap water with around five particles per liter. The expensive premium water carries the plastic, the tap water is in many places cleaner and almost free. To be honest about it: tap water quality varies by region, and some places add chlorine for safety or fluoride, which is more controversial. Know your water. But here too: the simple, almost free thing was quietly the better one. Provable, and no one looks.

Living water: the deepest image in the Bible

Natural spring in the forest

And here water becomes more than a drink. The Bible begins with the Spirit of God hovering over the waters (Genesis 1:2). And Yehoshua takes the simplest thing in the world and makes it the image of himself: “Whoever drinks of the water that I give him will never thirst again” (John 4:14), and “streams of living water will flow from his body” (John 7:38).

The sharpest word stands in Jeremiah, and it reads like a description of our whole age: “My people have committed a double sin: they have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and dug themselves cisterns, cracked cisterns that hold no water” (Jeremiah 2:13). Leaving the living spring and digging leaky, self-made containers. That is the history of food in one sentence, and it is at the same time the history of the soul.

Wisdom, not law

No rule, no counting. Drink water, pure, when you are thirsty. Let it replace the sugary drinks, this one swap does more than most diets. Know your tap water, a simple filter or a glass bottle beats the plastic. And do not forget the deeper thirst that water points to. Simple, clear, given and free.
