Sin means separation from love, from the source itself. The Greek word behind it, hamartia, literally means: to miss the mark. It is a word from archery, not from the courtroom.
Where the Word Comes From
Hamartia was Greek for the arrow that misses its target. The Hebrew chata carries the same picture: hitting beside the mark, missing the way. The only question is: which target? The target is the connection to the source, to the Father’s love. Sin is the state in which this connection is missed and torn. It describes a chasm, not a penalty notice.
Why It Is Heard as a List of Deeds
Over the centuries the chasm turned into a catalog. Registers of sins, confession lists, a ledger of offenses in debit and credit. Looking at the single deeds hides the root. A deed is a fruit. The root beneath it is always the separation from love. Whoever only counts the fruits fights symptoms forever and overlooks what produces them.
What the Bible Means: The Torn Connection
In the first book Adam hides when he hears God’s voice (Genesis 3:8-10). It is not God who withdraws, it is man. The connection is broken, and everything else follows from it. The whole gospel is the story of how this connection is restored. Yeshua bridges the chasm so that man can come home. Redemption is reconnection.
Man heard the voice of God and hid himself. The connection was torn, and that is what Scripture calls the basic evil: separation from the source of life.

If sin is separation, then rescue is reconnection. It is not about working off a list of debts but about coming home into love. The Father is already waiting, as with the lost son, who was still far away when the father ran to meet him (Luke 15:20). That takes the fear out of the word. Sin shows where you belong, and love brings you back there.
