Sonship is the standing of a child of the Father, with full rights and a full inheritance. The Greek huiothesia means being placed as a son, irreversible and complete.
Where the Word Comes From
Huiothesia was the Roman legal act of adoption. Whoever was adopted this way became a full heir, legally irrevocable, with every right of the household. Paul picks up exactly this image: “You have received the Spirit of sonship, in whom we cry: Abba, dear Father” (Romans 8:15). Abba is the Aramaic word a child uses for his daddy, utterly familiar and without distance.
Why It Is Often Missed
Many live as servants who must earn the master’s favor every day. They pray as if they had to persuade, and they serve as if they were on probation. But the son does not have to fight for anything. He is already in the house, already an heir, already loved. In the parable of the lost son, the returning son wanted to work as a hired hand, but the father put the ring on his finger and celebrated him as a son (Luke 15:19-24).
What the Bible Means
“So you are no longer a servant, but a child; and if a child, then also an heir through God” (Galatians 4:7). Man steps out of the spirit of slavery into the freedom of a child. That is the ground everything else stands on: whoever knows he is a son or a daughter prays differently, lives differently, and receives differently.
Why This Sets You Free
Healing, provision, peace, all of that is what a child receives, not what it earns. The son does not have to beg, he may ask and give thanks. In sonship, fear falls away, for a loved child does not fear the Father. In this standing, a person is free to live the way he is built.
