Three Hebrew words carry what we simply call “life”: neshamah, nephesh and ruach. They all circle around the same image: life is breath, and the breath comes from God.
Where the Words Come From
Neshamah is the breath, the breath of life. Nephesh is the living, breathing being, often translated as “soul”. Ruach means spirit, wind and breath at once. All three hang on breathing, and the root n-sh-m itself sounds like an exhale. For the Hebrew, a human being was not a casing with a soul inside, but one whole, breathing creature, made alive by God’s breath.
Why We Often Split It Apart
We sort body, soul and spirit into separate drawers. Scripture sees the one, whole human being, who lives because God has lent him his breath. Take the breath away, and the whole person returns to dust. Give it, and life arises.
What the Bible Means
“Then the LORD God formed the man from dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life (neshamah) into his nostrils. So the man became a living soul (nephesh)” (Genesis 2:7). Life is borrowed breath. Every breath is a quiet reminder of the Giver.

The breath connects you in every moment with the one who gives it. To breathe consciously and calmly is therefore more than technique, it is coming to rest at the source. The Spirit of God is called in Scripture the same ruach, the breath that creates new life. Where you breathe, there is life, and life is a gift.
